Anionic PAM carries carboxylate (–COO⁻) groups along its polymer backbone. When exposed to high concentrations of divalent cations (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺) common in Basra formation water, these anionic charges form insoluble salts, causing the polymer chain to precipitate or lose viscosity. Nonionic Polyacrylamide (NPAM) lacks charged groups and relies on neutral hydrogen bonding, maintaining high chain extension and consistent flocculation performance regardless of high salinity or mineral hardness.
NPAM powder should be dissolved in clean water at a concentration of 0.1% to 0.3% (w/v). Water temperature should ideally be between 20°C and 40°C. Mechanical stirring must be maintained at low speed (200-400 RPM) to prevent shear degradation of high molecular weight chains. Dissolution typically completes within 45–60 minutes. The stock solution should be diluted further before injection into the wastewater or process stream.
