Standard Anionic Polyacrylamide (APAM) primarily functions as a general-purpose flocculant for suspended solids settling. PHPA (Partially Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide) contains a precise high level of carboxylate group hydrolysis (20%-35%) designed specifically for viscosity enhancement, clay encapsulation, shale inhibition in oilfield drilling muds, and secondary/tertiary enhanced oil recovery (EOR).
PAM powder must be added gradually into a turbulent vortex of clean water using a mechanical auto-doser or eductor system at a concentration of 0.1% to 0.3% (w/v). The solution should be stirred gently at 200-400 RPM for 45 to 60 minutes. Excessive shear stirring (>1000 RPM) should be avoided to prevent molecular polymer chain degradation.
When kept in original unopened packaging within a cool, dry, and ventilated warehouse below 35°C (95°F), solid dry PHPA powder has a shelf life of 24 months. Aqueous working solutions should be consumed within 24 to 48 hours to prevent loss of viscosity due to microbial degradation or hydrolytic breakdown.
