Polyacrylamide powder dissolves slower in cold water (0°C to 10°C). We recommend pre-warming make-up water to 20°C–30°C if possible. If pre-warming is unavailable, increase agitation time to 60–90 minutes using low-shear mechanical mixers (200–400 RPM) to prevent non-dissolved gel particles ("fish eyes") from blinding downstream filters.
Selection depends on the surface charge of the suspended solids. Inorganic solids (mineral tailings, clay, silica, metallic oxides) generally carry a positive surface charge or respond best to high molecular weight Anionic PAM. Organic sludge (municipal biological sludge, food processing waste) carries negative charges and requires Cationic PAM. Our laboratory provides complimentary jar-testing sample matching to determine the precise optimal charge density and molecular weight.
Unopened dry powder polyacrylamide has a shelf life of 24 months when stored in a cool, dry warehouse below 35°C. Bags should be kept off concrete floors on wooden or plastic pallets. Although sub-zero temperatures do not degrade dry powder chemistry, exposure to high moisture can cause caking. Stock should be allowed to acclimatize to room temperature prior to opening.
